Cyber Defense Tip: Keep your Web browser up-to-date

Software companies are always working to improve their programs, like adding new features and fixing software vulnerabilities that Cyber Criminals can exploit. Web browser companies will release updated versions of their software that you can download and install, usually for free.

You should try and keep your Web browser software as up-to-date as possible by installing the newest version. Ask a trusted adult to help you find out which version you are running. Download and install the newest version if yours is out-of-date.

Fully Operational

The school's security is now fully operational. For once there is nothing more I'd care to add to it. Ward and I have been testing the defenses for almost a week now. It is as close to perfect as we could come. Everyone will have to do their part when the Cyber Villains attack, but the firewall should still hold.

Working with Ward

I find working with Ward to be a pleasant distraction from my fears about being fully prepared for the Cyber Villain attack. He is a kind and intelligent man, despite the physical nature of his job. I often find myself thinking about the Valentine's Day gift he gave me.

I am going to recommend to Omni that she have Ward and I continue to coordinate our efforts to ensure the school's security even after this crisis is averted.

Cyber Defense Threat: Joke Programs

Joke programs are prank programs that cause your computer to behave strangely or display fake error messages that trick you into thinking something is wrong. They can change the appearance of your computer's desktop or mouse cursor, or even make it look like your hard drive has been erased. Joke programs do not harm your computer, but they can make it difficult to use.

Unlike malware, joke programs do not change or infect files or copy themselves. They must be intentionally installed on your computer by the person who wants to play a joke on you, and are usually easy to remove. They are intended to be a funny joke but are usually just annoying and frustrating.

New Friends

I've been working day and night on new defenses that will specifically target the Cyber Villains we know we will be facing. They are small programs, similar to viruses, which will turn the Cyber Villain's specific weakness into their own destruction. I'm just beginning to integrate them into our existing firewalls. The Cyber Villains will be in for a nasty surprise.

Scout Leads the Lab

Beep! Scout is now the ruler of Diagnostics! Beep! Dr. Keen has been captured by the Cyber Villains. Scout is mounting an operation to save her. Beep. Scout will save the day.

April Fools! Beep! Did you believe Scout? Was Scout funny? Dr. Keen tried to explain this tradition to me of telling lies on April 1st. Beep. Scout's not sure he understands, so he thought he'd give it a go. Beep.
