Not Another Breach
The recent kidnapping of Alan is not another breach in our security systems. Alan willingly left the safety of the school and met with a stranger in real life. There was nothing that we could have done here to prevent this from happening.
Remember cadets, we have rules for a reason. You have to be smart and follow the rules, otherwise we Cyber Defenders won't be able to protect you. Alan, we are going to get you back!

Cyber Defense Tip: Be careful with Instant Messenger files
Files transferred through an instant messenger program can hide all kinds of malware and should be treated just as carefully as email attachments. Cyber criminals will send instant messages and infected files to anyone, so you should avoid instant messages from people you don't know. You should delete unwanted messages without even replying to them, it only encourages the cyber criminals. You can also change your settings to block messages from people that you don't know.
Even if the file is from someone you trust and you were expecting it, it's a good idea to be careful and scan any files with anti-virus software before opening them. Some malware programs will send instant messages to everyone on your Buddy List trying to spread, so if your friend's computer is infected it could be sending you messages! If a person on your Buddy list is sending strange messages, files, or Web site links, you should just sign off.

Facing Old Projects
Now that most of the repair work to our security systems is done I can return to my old projects. The thing is I'm not sure I want to yet. I'm going to talk to Ward and see if there isn't anything more I can do to help him with the security side of things.

I got one!
I got one! Beep! Scout got a Valentine! Now I understand. Thank you everyone! I am so happy.
Dr. Keen got one, too, but she turned red like Alan did and won't talk about it. Why do humans do that?

Cyber Defense Threat: Trojan Horse
A Trojan horse is a nasty type of malware that can either be disguised as real software or come attached to it. Trojan horses are different from viruses and worms because they cannot copy themselves.
The name "Trojan horse" comes from a classical Greek myth. During their war against the Trojans, the Greeks left a large wooden horse with Greek soldiers hidden inside near the city of Troy. The Trojans thought it was a gift and brought the horse inside the city walls. As soon as night fell, the Greek soldiers sneaked out of the horse and let the Greek army into the city. Trojan horse malware works in a similar way; they look useful or interesting, but are actually dangerous when opened.
Refer to Cyber Defense Tip "Defending your computer against malware" for what you can do to protect your computer from Trojan horses.

What's a Valentine?
Scout here! Beep! Everyone in school is talking about Valentines. What are they, and how do you get them? I tried to ask Alan but he turned red and left the room. Is it something bad? Does it make you sick? Scout wants to know! Beep!

Peace of Mind
It's been over a week and the firewall is holding strong. I see no suspicious activity happening with it at all. I am so relieved we finally have that problem solved.
Ward's been overworked lately so I've been helping him with security tasks. All of my personal projects can wait when it comes to the safety of the school. I'm really glad this firewall has been holding steady. It is giving both of us a little time off to relax.
